Why Handmade Wood Products Don't All Look Exactly Alike

Posted by Wayne Collier on Oct 1st 2026

When you buy a handmade wood product, one of the things that makes it special is that no two pieces will ever look exactly the same.

Wood is a natural material. Every board has its own grain pattern, knots, color variations and markings. Even two boards cut from the same tree can look noticeably different.

For us, that's not a flaw. That's part of what makes working with real wood interesting.

Every Board Has Its Own Character

Walk through a stack of lumber and you'll quickly see that every board is different.

Some have straight, consistent grain. Others have sweeping grain patterns, knots, mineral streaks or areas where the color changes naturally across the board.

When we build a bench, menu holder, shelf or other wood product, those characteristics become part of the finished piece.

That means the product you receive may not have the exact same grain pattern or knot placement as the one shown in the photograph—and that's completely normal for a product made from real wood.

Stain Doesn't Look Exactly the Same on Every Board

Natural variation doesn't disappear when wood is stained.

Different areas of a board can absorb stain differently. Grain direction, density and natural characteristics of the wood all affect the finished color.

That's why two benches finished with the same brown or gray stain can have subtle differences in shade and appearance.

We try to keep our finishes consistent, but we're also working with a natural material rather than something manufactured to be perfectly uniform.

Knots and Grain Aren't Defects

Rustic woodworking is especially about allowing some of the natural character of the wood to remain visible.

Knots, grain patterns and other natural markings are often what give a piece its personality.

We aren't trying to make solid wood look like plastic or manufactured furniture. We're trying to build something that still looks and feels like wood when we're finished.

Handmade Adds Another Layer of Individuality

There's also a difference between something coming down an automated production line and something being made individually in a small woodshop.

Pieces are cut, assembled, sanded and finished by hand. Small variations are naturally part of that process.

Our goal isn't to make every piece indistinguishable from the one before it.

Our goal is to make each one strong, functional and well built.

Your Piece Is Your Piece

Product photographs are intended to show the design, size, finish and overall appearance you can expect.

But the particular grain, knots and natural markings in your piece will be its own.

That's one of the reasons we've enjoyed woodworking for generations. You can build the same design many times, but the wood makes every project a little different.

And years from now, those little differences are often what give a handmade piece its character.
